Hello My name is Harlan Mark Vale and I have a small studio in Prescott, AZ. I studied 20th Century Composition, Electronic Music and Audio Engineering at The Evergreen State College. My experience comes from writing, recording, mixing and releasing my own music for many years. I am able to use this experience to help you bring your ideas forward.
I am an independent multi-instrumentalist composer/performer whose roots are in explorations into analog synthesis and free jazz improvisation. Growing from that seed, today I have focused primarily upon creating soundscapes for alternative health therapies, guided meditations and spiritual environments for sacred wisdom traditions from around the world. My production ethic is centered around a sound design approach that supports instrumentation, feeling, emotion, narration, poetry and a holistic inquiry to life. The results of which have led to creating music that is both visual and storytelling in nature. So the genres which tend to be my strengths are ambient, new age, minimalism, soundtrack, experimental and hybrid sonic portraits.
I have no real acoustic studio space and my productions are done almost totally "inside the box". Neither do I have any big league credits to plug or endorse, yet I have passionately produced a large body of unique work to draw upon. What I do have is over 40 years of experience facilitating my own needs as a composer. This experience becomes valuable customer service when it is shared with other people in a collaborative action towards the realization of a common good. Your vision, manifest. I humbly offer my services to the world with an open heart and a willingness to grow further as a person as well as to promote this art form. Thank you

Implicate Orchestra (Piano Concerto)
Implicate Orchestra (Piano Concerto)This is a Piano Concerto that I wrote on 1.16.2013. It started with a piano improvisation that I decided to orchestrate into a larger piece. I later layered that midi performance into other instruments. Then I rendered them as audio files and finally automated a mix to feature different elements of the composition. Most of the recording was done in Reason v6.5. I did use some EastWest plugins in Logic Express v8.0.2 which ended up back in Reason. The title comes from David Bohm's concept of "implicate / explicate order". These are two different frameworks for understanding the same phenomenon or aspect of reality. So, to me, this composition is taking the enfolded structures of the original piano track and then they are brought outwards into the explicate or unfolded order as a full orchestration.
2.04.2013#2 Plateaux of the Strong Hearts
2.04.2013#2 Plateaux of the Strong Hearts2.04.2013#2 "Plateaux of the Strong Hearts" by Harlan Mark Vale This piece was realized in Reason 6.5.2 on Feb 4, 2013. Several friends and acquaintances who have had heart attacks lately, that have very little to do with their physical health. This seems to be a period of quickening for all issues concerning strengthening the heart on all levels.
10.01.2012 Bazantar Śruti
10.01.2012 Bazantar Śruti10.01.2012 Bazantar Śruti by Harlan Mark Vale was realized in Reason v6.5.1. This piece was written after creating a NN-XT sampler instrument based on the acoustic instrument called a Bazantar. Mark Deutsch developed an instrument that was an acoustic bass with 29 sympathetic strings.
8.27.2012 The Past Will Never Look The Same Again
8.27.2012 The Past Will Never Look The Same AgainThis piece was realized in Reason v6.5.1 on 8.27.2012 by Harlan Mark Vale. It was an experiment of creating a 'harmonizer patch' using the Rack Extension called Polar. It is a pitch shifter and delay/modulation device. I am using a solo electric guitar instrument played on my keyboard controller. The title came from a conversation with an old friend I hadn't talked with in decades. The realization was on how much disparity in my current perspective there was from who I used to be.
5.02.2012The Day of Sublime Hearing
5.02.2012The Day of Sublime HearingThe Day of Sublime Hearing by Harlan Mark Vale / Reason 6. This is an NN-XT sampler patch that I created using several Tibetan brass bowls layered together in different ways. By sustaining them, they have a kind of organ flavor to them. I love the sound of these things.
5.01.2012 For Every Life Upon This Earth
5.01.2012 For Every Life Upon This EarthHere is another environmental soundscape using native rattles, an orchestra tuning up and a LA formant vector type malstrom patch in Reason 6. Three tracks.
Moses & Osiris
Moses & OsirisThis piece is from my 1998 album "The Elastic Footpath". It is a live Korg X5 improvisation. At the time there was some historical research that indicated Moses and Osiris were both alive during the same period of time. This was my interpretation of what the meaning would be if these two great dynasties were to met face to face. It is quite a powerful and compelling composition. One of my all time greats.
This Deathless Vehicle 8.28.2011
This Deathless Vehicle 8.28.2011Here is another piece that I did in Reason 6. It is from a series for experimental theater productions. It has a kind of gamelan intro to it. The layered combinator patch and chord progression I created, when it was all finished, vaguely reminded me of Zappa's 'Deathless Horsie' so hence the title. I like the violin solo, even over the 'finger triggered drums'. One day, I'll play real drums for this composition. Until then, enjoy.
