ABOUT

The Chesapeake Steel Band is a community steel band located in the Greater Annapolis, Maryland area. We are an ensemble band with usually between 10 and 15 people playing steel drums. We are proud to spread the steel drum art form in the Annapolis regional area.

We've been around in one form or the other since about 2000. It all started with a few of us taking steel drum lessons with Kevin Martin and/or Mike Miller. Both are members of a local band called "The Geckos". The lessons were coordinated through Kevin's business, Rockcreek Steel Drums. After a few years went by Kevin and Mike kicked us out of the nest. Mike still works with us at rehearsals (thank goodness). We've evolved into a community steel drum band. Everyone has day jobs, but we love to play pan and given the opportunity love to perform for the community and private functions every now and then.

Influences

We have the greatest respect for the pioneers of pan, like Winston Spree Simon, Ellie Mannette, Bertie Marshall, Tony Williams, Rudolph Charles, and others. We equally have the greatest respect for the modern day pan masters who give us inspiration, like Robert Greenidge, Ray Holman, Jeff Narell, Andy Narell, Len Boogsie Sharpe and many many others who love the pan including the entire faculty of the Mannette Steel Drums Festival of Steel, Kevin Martin of Rockcreek Steel Drums, The Geckos, and especially our music director, Mike Miller.
