Hi! I'm trying to put together a dollar-store Magnetic Fields/Guided by Voices/Fountains of Wayne to play lighthearted, unpolished acoustic indie rock/pop originals for fun. I love power pop and have no interest in playing Americana, blues, folk, or country.
Friends have expressed interest in playing bass, percussion, and guitar, but things are just getting started. There'll be some form of recording at some point! Oh, and I'm in south Scottsdale, and maybe we practice in my front room? It's all kind of up in the air.
My ears are pretty shot, so I'm trying to keep it as quiet as possible, so no electric instruments needed unless you play as loud as laptop speakers.
I unexpectedly wrote 40 short songs (that at least aspire to be smart and/or witty) this year, for FAWM (fawm) and their 50/90 Challenge. I am not overburdened by vocal talent, but hopefully I'm at least mildly amusing, songwise. Link got mangled, so I guess search Y T for Stunod or use james j barnett at sound cloud.
If you're interested in the other song demos, the Spotify playlist of influences, or me blathering on at length about what I have in mind, happy to send them. I wanted to keep this short.
I don't have a super-specific sound in mind, but I'd love to get someone/something in the mix that isn't a guy and/or a guitar!
What I originally had in mind was rotating lead vocals and some peculiar instrumentation, like the Magnetic Fields or the Pogues. If I could avoid any occurrence of a strummed dreadnought acoustic guitar I'd be really happy. I'll probably be playing guitalele sort of like a vihuela and making electronic bloops on my iPad.
I've ordered a little accordion and we'll see how that goes. I have a hunch I'll like it more than the neighbors.
