ABOUT

Hello Fellow Musicians!
Thanks for expressing interest in my new music group the Sunshine Gang at Walter Reed Community Center every Friday from 1:00 PM- 3:00 PM beginning April 14th. Generally in order to participate at Arlington County 55+ Centers you need to be a member at the $20.00/year level, but the center may allow you entry for the first session or sessions free as a trial before having to join. Call the Walter Reed Community Center for any guidance on this.

Sunshine Gang Rules:

1. The Sunshine Gang is a new rock and roll band forming at Walter Reed Community Center in Arlington VA (Walter Reed Drive & 16 Street). We will meet in the ‘Arts & Crafts’ room each Friday from 1 to 3 PM beginning April 14th, 2017. Musicians are invited to bring their instruments, and singers are invited to come and sing. We’ll practice our songs each week with the intent of (eventually) playing in front of some live audiences. Let’s have fun and see how things progress. I’m interested to see how good we can sound with some work and practice. (Note: We will not be providing individual music instruction. We envision that you already have some intermediate musical skills. ) No pay will be provided. This is a volunteer organization.
2. There are no auditions to join, but you must be a member of the Arlington County 55+ network of centers. It’s only $20.00 /year membership for Arlington residents.
3. Generally we will focus on rock and roll music from the 1960s to the 1980s but there is no hard and fast rule. You can even bring your original song or simply request a jam in a particular key. Folk, country and gospel are fine too.
4. We will go around in a circle and each person gets to choose and lead a song. You can pass, and later reclaim your turn.
5. For choosing a song, please bring copies for everyone to keep as part of their song portfolio. The song sheet should have lyrics with the chords above the lyrics for each line. Probably 10 copies will be enough to begin with. You can also request a song that someone else has previously introduced to the group.
6. As you will be provided with song sheets by others, please remember to bring BACK your songsheets each week because we will most likely be doing this song each week to get it as professional sounding as we can.
7. When it’s your turn to choose a song, you get to arrange it however you like. Others can offer opinions, but ultimately it’s your song and you can choose the tempo, key and whether or not to have others soloing.
8. Please refrain from playing too loud or from ‘stealing the show’ from others. This is a group effort. The music should become something greater than the sum of the parts. If you do not hear your voice/instrument blending with others, then you might be too loud.
9. For any shows that we do for the public, we will not be collecting any money. We will do them as a service to our community.
10. Further questions can be directed to the Walter Reed Community Center Center Director.
11. Now let’s have fun and see what we can do!
