ABOUT

hey y'all. i've got a band here in college station, and don't have too much free time, due to being in bskewl, but I'm always down for meeting new musicians to jam or exchange ideas! also potentially available for one-off fill-ins.

for guitar, style is kind of a hendrixy lead and rhythm at the same time, if that makes sense, but i can play with a dedicated rhythm guitarist, too.

i can play slide in the johnny winter/duane allman vein, too, and also familiar with a couple of alt tunings and international scales/rhythms, so i'm a pretty versatile guitarist. i don't want to say anything like "i'm very good" or anything since i still have an infinite amount to learn, but i'm really comfortable with the guitar.

i can play bass as an extension, and although i sometimes bring some of my guitar style over, i understand how to stay in the pocket and anchor the roots such that the lead player wouldn't need a rhythm guitarist at all. i don't have right-hand calluses, though, so if you needed me to fill in for your bassist on short notice, i'd probably have to play with a pick!

i can also do the frontman thing. in my current band (a four piece), i'm singing and blowing harp. occasionally (like once or twice a night) i will strap on a guitar to play slide, but when i lead sing, i like to focus on singing and stage theatrics.

i guess i'm a "tenor" range -- i tend to sing in robert plant's or steven tyler's range -- but i don't claim to be a classically-trained singer at all, so i would never call myself "a tenor"! i can *hit* some pretty low notes, but they just don't sound as good. i guess my main "comfort zone" is like g3-f5...i can stretch out of it, but not 100% reliably.

Influences

guitar: hendrix, jimmy page
slide: johnny winter, duane allman
harp: none really but started out with stones & early chess stuff (like lil walter, howlin wolf, james cotton, sonny boy 2...)
song&dance: jagger, plant, tyler

not many true "influences" musically, but definitely *not* limited to the late-60's/early-70's bluesrock that the list implies...i just cut my teeth on all that stuff, and when i got comfortable enough, i stopped using others' ideas for practice and kind of made practice time a solo jam-session improv type of thing...topping that with never having had a lesson, i've come out with a pretty uniquely expressive improvisation-based style that can basically fit on anything.

EQUIPMENT

lectrics: 6 in various tunings, (will have 7th by the time i find time to finish it) mainly all built or modified by myself. a couple are cheapie "project guitars" off of ebay whose guts have been replaced with better-quality electronics and made have some other modifications for certain playstyle or tone considerations. scratch-built guitars run $1000-$1500 each time, so that should give an idea of the quality. not top of the line 5-figure stuff, but all professional-grade components to be sure. pups are mainly rio's these days, but i've got a couple boutique single coils spread around a few guitars as well.

coustics: 1966 gibson b-52 (parlour-size) is my main acoustic (handed down from mom). i've got a cheapie ibanez super-shortscale that's strung nashville. 10-string, 5-course brasilian guitar for 12-string sounds. 2 resonators: 1 wood (original dobro), 1 brass (rogue, haha, but it's great for slidework because i don't need well-set action).

bass: fender mustang (w/ jazz pups). no idea what the pups are but they sound good when played through a real amp. my bass amp sucks. =D

amps: ac30h2 (probably will stay at family studio in wdlds...too expensive to lug around) and bugera v55 (also all-tube, of course...surprisingly comparable tone for almost 75% off the ticket). small tube amp...laney ac15 (i think?) for practice/informal jams/harp. couple of leftover SS too.

harps: all regular keys and a b-flat (for f). can play straight, cross, and slant.
