John Boggess

Hi All,

I am looking for a soulful singer to work with me on some original songs. I’m the keyboard player with the band Horizon. We’ve been playing together since the late 70s. Horizon recorded several of my songs back then and had some luck with radio play in the early 80s. We also got to do several shows with the likes of the Commodores, Kool and the Gang, Tavares, Roger/Zapp and KC and the Sunshine Band. Geffen Records was working with us on a record deal before our A&R contact died (yes, literally died). The deal didn’t happen and the singer and bass player left the group. The main core of Horizon stayed together and we’re still playing today. Having our own music playing in rotation on radio stations in South Texas was the thing that separated us from all of the other great cover bands from that time.

Though Horizon is still playing, we haven’t been doing many original songs and so I am trying to find a singer to work with on updating the early tunes. Additionally, I never stopped writing and so there are many more songs that are essentially sitting on my computer.

A couple of years ago, a Japanese record company put out a CD with recordings from Horizon’s early years. Last year, a record company from France licensed one of my tunes for a compilation album there. I’ve sold all of the old vinyl to collectors mainly in Europe.

The purpose behind the story is to let people here know that many of the songs have been radio tested and have held their own over the years (people are still buying them). You see lots of singers/song writers post info on Bandmix but they don’t post recordings. So you have no way of knowing who you are actually dealing with. That’s a little frustrating to me, so I wanted to post everything I could about me/my tunes so potential collaborators know who they’ll be working with.

The idea for the collaboration is to pick 10-12 songs and record those tunes (I have a home studio). We can figure out how to monetize the partnership when we meet. We will also have the band (Horizon) to work with in performing the material. These guys are some of the best players in town. We’ve been invited to do the 101.9 smooth jazz shows at La Cantera recently and perform all over town. You can check in with David Munoz (the only smooth jazz radio guy in town) about the band. (On Facebook, HorizonSA)

Just to be clear, I’m really not interested in a hired gun, someone to do the recordings for a price and then not being available for performances. I am interested in developing a good working relationship that benefits both of us.

There are lots of good singers out there. Think of all those you’ve seen in the top 10s of the singing shows. Most don’t succeed after the shows because they don’t have their own songs people can identify with. And, you only have to look at George Strait’s success to know that someone else can write your songs and you can do pretty well.

I’m trying to find someone who understands those points and would like to work together on developing a block of songs that they can call their own. Or, maybe Horizon becomes the vehicle for recording and releasing the songs. There are lots of ways to go about making some money for whoever works out.

Here is a Soundcloud link to some older and newer material. The smooth jazz piano instrumentals (Highland Glide, Baby Likes It and Dream Scapin’) are tunes I’ve recently written and recorded. Hold Me, Try My Love Again and They Don’t Make ‘Em Like You are three of the tunes from the 80s that played on the radio. These are the ones I would like to update. Heart at Work, Let it Go and Sunday’s Comin’ are positive message/Christian based tunes recently written and recorded. These recordings have different singers. Better Kind of Man has the current lineup of Horizon featured. That song will give you an idea of the musicianship of the group.

Here is a link to the compilation album released in France. They Don’t Make ‘Em Like You is the second track on the album.

Here is a link to the Japanese CD release.

If you want to know exactly who I am, here’s my LinkedIn profile. I own my own communications/PR firm.

Thanks for checking things out. Please call or email with questions, thoughts, ideas, etc.
