Joni Dega
What started out as "just joking around" turned into a true passion for singing and songwriting for Joni Dega. “About four-and-a-half years ago, I was messing around and made a stupid little joke song,” Joni recalls. “Then when people heard it, they were all like, ‘you can really sing!’ It was like a light bulb went off over my head,” he jokes.
While his start as a singer was not that long ago, Joni’s love for music stretches much further back. “When I was nine years old, I went to my uncle’s recording studio. That’s when I knew what I wanted to do,” he recalls. “I always liked all types of music. My friend from the urban community would look at me crazy because I would listen to things like rock-and-roll.”
Joni’s teenage years found him “caught up in the wrong crowd, selling drugs.” In 2000, he enrolled in the renowned Sheffield Institute for The Recording Arts. Upon graduation, he built his own recording studio and began engineering and producing. Musically likeminded people were hard to find, though, as he explains. “The people I was working with were bullsh**,” he says bluntly. “They weren’t that musically inclined.”
With his certificate from Sheffield, and a background in hip hop production, it wasn’t long before Joni started getting his feet wet singing hooks on songs (such as D.O.G.'s "Rock Ready") then recording his own music. "People liked it so I just kept doing it," he explains. "I knew if I was gonna do it, I didn't want to do any R&B stuff--you know that whiny (whining to a chick all day) stuff," Joni explains. "But I always liked rock-and-roll so that's what I wanted to do and it has worked out pretty good."
While music still didn’t pay the bills, Joni was caught in a drug deal by Md state police and drug task force, set up by a close friend of his (or so he thought). In mid 2008 Joni Dega was sentenced to 2 ten year sentences for drug trafficking and distribution charges. By this being his 1st offense being convicted he went thru the boot camp program which gave him a release after 2 ½ of serving time.On November 3rd 2010 Joni was released to finish sentence on home detion until late april of 2011.
Joni’s voice lends itself perfectly to the type of songs he writes—whether they be world weary reflections, spiritual ponderings, or just good old party songs. A truly prolific songwriter, he has already penned over 200 songs in less than three years.
