 At the age of 9 received cuatro classes from professor Nicanor Santamaría and piano from professor José Gallegos, and integrated to cultural events programed by his primary education school, “Colegio Sucre”. At the age of 10 he and his brother Carlos began private english language classes. At the age of 11 he received basic guitar classes from his own father. Later, he continued on his own.
 From 1962, begining secondary education, José Luis integrated folk groups, theatre and journalist groups, and every cultural events programed by “Liceo Tomás de Heres”, Ciudad Bolívar, Bolívar state, Venezuela, and with his own father in Jazz Band of Angostura (precursor of Angostura Orchestra) and frequent musical meetings with his many musician friends.

 He received vocal techniques lessons from professor Eduardo Gómez Viamonte, Ciudad Bolivar, Bolivar state, Venezuela.
 He learned on his own to play keyboard and made the complete production of his last concerts and one of his four albums, “Antes que reine el silencio”, in wich he recorded some of his own songs. This album was awarded by “Asociación de Poetas y Escritores Hispanos” (Orlando Fl) and earned a diploma of special recognition by United States Congress.
