Joe Lewis Jr. Bandleader and Gifted Drummer. I have Played since the age of 12. I grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota and traveled for many years to Detroit/Motown. I played with the group The Family since the age of 12. Whie in Minneapolis growing up, other Minneapolis groups included The Lewis Conection, Prince, Andre Cymone, Alexander O'Neal, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, Sue Ann Carwell, The Time aka The Original 7 and Bobby Lyle. These are the styles I grew up listening to and playing with "The Minneapolis Sound." In the mid 80's I relocated to Northern California, I lived and played there for 20 years. Some of the people I worked with were The Edwin Hawkins singers, Shelia E., Tower of Power, The Doobie Brothers and Ali Wilson of The Temptations. I worked with a small Jazz Combo while in Northern California...we worked at small clubs and hotels. I also worked with Maya Angelou at her book signing. I was fortunate enough to travel and tour with Lydia Pense & Cold Blood. Lydia Pense & Cold Blood debuted when the Filmore was at it's peak as one of the nations musical Mecca's. Owner Bill Graham was so impressed with Lydia's voice and the sound of the band that he immediately signed Cold Blood to his new record label. To quote Lydia Pense "I was one of the funkiest drummer's she ever had." I relocated to the Pacific Northwest and started a Smooth Jazz Society. I also put together a Jazz band, Joe Lewis and The JazzCats. We performed at banquets, corporate gatherings, wineries, weddings fund raisers and festivals. I helped promote Smooth/Contemporary Jazz throughout the Inland Northwest and beyond. I have recently been working in the corporate/management world. I am now looking to get back to my roots and fulfill my destiny of music making.
