ABOUT

Individuals complete a certificate program to increase job skills and knowledge for a current job, possibly earn a promotion, or to change careers. Certificates can be earned by anyone from someone with a high school degree to those who have a graduate degree. Certificate programs are offered on campus and also online at traditional colleges and at online-only schools.
Public, for-profit, and not-for-profit colleges all offer certificate programs. In 2010, according to the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System, public two-year colleges (community colleges) awarded 52 percent of certificates, private for-profit technical, vocational, business, and trade schools awarded 44 percent of certificates, and private nonprofit schools gave out 4 percent of all certificates. Certificate Programs are becoming especially popular at for-profit colleges. According to the Institute for College Access and Success, nearly two-thirds of credentials earned at for-profit colleges are certificates.
