I have been in many bands over the past 25+ years, have released many records, singles, splits, been on Compilations, etc sometimes for smaller “punk” or “indie” level labels, though most self released.
I have toured a fair amount, I’m not afraid to sleep on floors, and have stayed at hotels maybe once for every 50 nights on tour and consider it an unnecessary expense/luxury.
I grew up and still have roots in the punk/indie scene and still believe in the type of DIY code of ethics that exalts a mindset best exemplified by people like Ian Mackaye and Steve Albini and the like.
I consider myself more of a songwriter that happens to play guitar, bass, drums, and some keys. I am most proficient as a rhythm guitarist or bassist. Haven’t played drums in a few years but recently got a kit again and I’m hoping to get back to being a decent drummer. I don’t know theory or many obscure scales, but I am also not musically illiterate by a far cry. I understand and can play odd time signature music above average and often do so while also being the vocalist. I can play a 7/4 part and do vocals and stuff like that, without much problem.
I have primarily played noise rock, math rock, stoner rock, post hardcore, and space rock style stuff. I LOVE dissonance and ugly sounds and I have been known to have as many as 4 delay pedals on my pedalboard at times. I love delay. I have decent “players” gear, and often gig with no less than a half stack, but own multiple 4x12s and combos, and have toured with 2 heads and 3 cabs before, so I’m not afraid to get loud…at all. Typically I gig with a Marshall JCM and a 4x12 and a 2x12.
I am interested in Heavy music, Druggy music, Spacey stuff, but I also love Power Pop, some old Pop Punk and rock stuff (but lost interest when stuff like New Found Glory and that kinda stuff came around…I’m more so talking about Jawbreaker or J Church or Plow United).
I like alternative rock like Dinosaur Jr, My Bloody Valentine, Smashing Pumpkins, Sugar, Chavez and the Jesus Lizard.
I like grunge like Mudhoney, Soundgarden and Nirvana
I love the classics like Led Zeppelin and the Beatles. I detest Aerosmith.
I like doom like Black Sabbath, Cough, and Sleep but have no desire to be another band ripping off Black Sabbath unless there’s something making it unique.
I like weird music like early Modest Mouse, Tropical fu*k Storm, early Pink Floyd, Syd Barrett, the Melvins, 16 Horsepower and Black Heart Procession
