ABOUT

Progressive/Heavy Rock/Heavy Metal

I'm a 50 yr old experienced bass player and and part of a serious minded, established metal band. We perform original material and play music that is both challenging and fun to play.

I'm also interested in finding other musicians with similar musical tastes to jam with.

If you need a bassist that will be a positive, creative asset and influence, contact me. I'd love to explore the possibility! You can e-mail me at:

Influences

I began playing bass at the young age of 14, primarily for our church. I joined my first band at 15, a Christian band, and got my initial stage experience. As my teenage years progressed my playing ability developed as I started getting influences from people like John Entwistle of the Who and Chris Squire of Yes. I started playing rock with several local musicians and bands.

I loved the energy of bands like Van Halen. Then I discovered Rush and, like every bass player I have ever met, was profoundly influenced by the precision and complexity of Geddy Lee. The main thing that stood out for me in the music of Rush is that the bass can be an upfront instrument rather than always being a background instrument. That completely changed my perception of the instrument and the possibilities it offered if one takes advantage of it.

I was also greatly influenced by several amazing bass players that take the instrument to a new level such as the renowned Stanley Clarke, Jaco Pastorius, Mark King of Level 42 and several others. While I loved the ability and skill of these players, they didn’t perform the style of music I wanted to play, although they have influenced me greatly.

In the mid – late 80s I discovered Iron Maiden and that changed everything for me. I loved the high-energy music and complexity of the material they performed. Steve Harris is an amazing bassist and they are probably the best show performers I have ever seen.

I love to play music that is both challenging and fun. While I admire many, many musicians, these have been my primary influences.
