I believe the true measure of a steel player is how and what is played, behind, underneath and with the vocalist. How appropriate is the the playing for the individual song is the measure by which I feel a steel player should be judged. Does the player play with taste - is pretty much the bottom line.
What I’ve tried to present here is the exact opposite of what one might normally find. All of the songs are originals except for a countrified version of Skinny Love. Obviously, this forces the player to create parts that both fit the song and the style of the vocalist. I believe that creative parts recorded on original tracks is an excellent indicator of a players ability.
Jerry Garcia's intro to the CN&Y hit 'Teach Your Children'. If ever there was an appropriate pedal steel intro for a commercial radio song I believe Garcia's playing on this song is an excellent example of what a steel player should strive for. Probably the best ever is the playing of Buddy Emmons on the Judy Collins hit song 'Someday Soon.' Beautiful and understated as always Buddy's playing is both perfect and appropriate. Buddy Emmons will always be the standard. More recently on be Vince Gill’s tribute to Merl Haggard. It's a duo with Paul Franklin on pedal steel. It is wonderful song with soulful pedal steel.
