ABOUT

FYI: if you are into the material of Jorma Kaukonen (acoustic and/or electric) and have been looking to play some Hot *!!* Tuna - your search is over. I have gigged in a Hot Tuna specialty in the past, and worked with both Jack and Jorma (founding members of the Jefferson Airplane; Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees) at the Fur Peace Ranch. I welcome the opportunity to connect with musicians who love to play this stuff as it is becoming increasingly rare. Do not let this awesome material fade away- contact me. In the posted pictures you will see me performing for Jorma (Jack was out of frame). Two thumbs up from the boys!

I am always open to informal jams and focused sessions. Electric and Acoustic. While it was the sound of Paul McCartney that originally caught my young ear, my style became heavily influenced by Jack Casady (Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna/SVT) and Phil Lesh (Grateful Dead), giving me an emphasis on drive and tone in freeform and structured formats, and a spectrum ranging from acoustic blues, country, bluegrass and folk to full blown electric psychedelia, grunge, and jazz fusion. I welcome playing opportunities and believe it is important to play with new people often; you never know where the chemistry will be found. However, I am not actively looking to formally join another long term project at this time as my existing projects and demanding career keep my dance card fairly full. Still, an acoustic project continues to be of great interest to me, and I am available for fill-ins and short session work as well, acoustic or electric.

In an acoustic format I also offer Tenor Guitar and regular guitar.

I am currently involved in two main projects (plus related side projects) playing an eclectic blend of blues, Dead, Dylan, Stones, Pink Floyd, originals and more. One continuously advancing project, named FFT (Freedom from Tyranny), is centered around very well received original material in the Pink Floyd genre with elements of Blues. A very diverse sonic palette. It has been observed that FFT originals blend the tone of Pink Floyd with aspects of Jefferson Airplane and Grateful Dead, making for an an exciting mix. FFT practices and records in our studio in Willimantic, CT and continues to consider the addition of a keyboardist to the current line up of 5: 2 Guitars, Bass, Drums/Percussion, Female Background Vocal. FFT is recording a new CD for a 2019 release- the recordings posted here are live, unmixed and a bit old. In a concert setting FFT is a multi-media event in the psychedelic/Pink Floyd tradition, as shown in the posted pictures.

A second project (Morphus/Willi-Jam) is a less formal gathering in the same Willimantic, CT location. It is common for there to be guest players (vocalists, drums & percussion, guitars, harmonica, saxophone, keyboards, violin, etc). This is where I experience growth from different players and the exploration of unfamiliar material, including extensive improvisation. Morphus is the studio "house band" and is often called upon to back live performances of our regular guests (and guests often sit in on the occasional Morphus gigs). An extremely supportive culture. Feel free to contact me if you are interested in participating in our studio jams; we've met many fine folks and players this way, and most return again and again. For the curious: the origin of "Morphus" is that the band tends to "morph" from one song to the next Grateful Dead style. So, "Morph-Us". We actually call the transitions "morphs".

Willimantic Studio Schedule (typical):
Saturdays 7:30PM - 11:00PM: Willi-Jam with Morphus (Dead/Dylan/Stones/Blues/Southern/Americana-Classic Rock)

Sundays 1:30PM - 4:00PM: FFT (Originals, Pink Floyd...)

Influences

For the music: Hot Tuna (Jefferson Airplane)....Grateful Dead, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Beatles, Eric Clapton, U2, Who, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Foo Fighters, Wilco, John Mellencamp, Neil Young, Decemberists, Gillian Welch and classic blues from Chicago to Delta and out to Texas including the likes of Charley Patton, Son House, Rev Gary Davis, Robert Johnson, Lightnin' Hopkins, Roy Book Binder, BB King, Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and SRV. And most deeply by Miles Davis, who pretty much sums up everything there ever was and since. For the players themselves: Jack Casady, Phil Lesh, Paul McCartney, Pino Palladino, John Entwistle, John Kahn, Duck Dunn, T-Bone Wolk, Leland Sklar, Guy Pratt, Jeff Ament, John Patitucci, Bill Wyman, ..and so on....A very broad influence that is forever ongoing, but I am a lifelong student of the Casady (literally, one of Jack's students) and Lesh sound.... to use a pick or not to pick, that is the question.
(Answer: it depends, but usually not. It is required to properly achieve the Dead or McCartney sound).

Currently listening to (in no particular order):
Buddy Guy, Gary Clark Jr., Bob Dylan, Pearl Jam, Evanescence, David Bowie, Blondie, Heart, Wilco, Jason Isbell, Lightnin' Hopkins, Aoife O'Donovan, Sarah Jarosz, Bryan Sutton, Conor Oberst, The Lone Bellow, Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, Chick Corea, Al Di Meola, John Abercrombie, Willie Nelson, Bonnie Raitt, Sara Evans and Dwight Yoakam (that's right, quite a mixture). And, of course, a whole lot of FFT (great stuff!), Pink Floyd/Gilmour, Tuna/Kaukonen, and Miles. I listen to a lot of different genres. A lot. Just about everything but the thinnest of pop and offensive rap (there is little or no actual music there anyway).
