Influences

Tammy Rogers of Steeldrivers and Kyle Nix of Turnpike Troubadours are big influences on my fiddle playing as well as the old timers like Kenny Baker.

Samuel West (stavesacre, scatered-few, etc) is a huge influence on my drumming style.

Joe Satriani is a huge influence on my lead playing. I do a lot of legato runs, some sweeping, some bends but they tend to be more of a southern rock/blues kind of feel. I don't use a tremolo bar. I try to play notes that feel good, not what looks impressive.

Darrin Gray of Dazzling Killmen was influential on my bass playing, as well as bands like 7 seconds, afghan whigs, Rudimentary Peni.

My guitar playing is heavily influenced by many including Superchunk, Stworz, Afghan Whigs, Satriani, etc.

My acoustic and country music has a punk rock edge to it with a hint of goth. I draw influences from jazz, old time country, classical, and fusion and melodic metal.

I don't try to sound like anyone else. I simply follow my inner ear and try to play what's in my head and heart. The above bands are not necessarily my favorites, but they are influential on my playing style.

When I'm traveling in my car, I'm playing bluegrass and old time pre 1970 country music; mostly of obscure musicians who never made it big. I ignore mainstream music the best I can.

My favorite modern bands include Shane Smith & the Saints, Dolly Shine, Turnpike Troubadours, Wild Feathers and many other artists in the Red Dirt/Texas country/Americana scene.
