Mike started playing bass because his friends wanted to play Nirvana's Polly for their high school talent show and no one else wanted to play bass. They got cut.

Mike's earliest memories of music were grounded in pop (Michael Jackson & Prince), rock, hair bands and old school hip hop (Beastie Boys, Run DMC). During high school, Mike turned to classic rock (Led Zepplin), alternative and grunge (Soundgarden, Alice in Chains), but left some space for 90's R&B (Bel Biv Devoe) and a little country (Garth Brooks). As Mike's musical tastes grew, he dove deep into jazz fusion (Return to Forever, Herbie Hancock), jam bands (Phish, Bruce Hornsby, Dave Mathews) and funk (Jamiroquai, Funkadelic, etc) , which is when Mike really started taking on the bass. Since then he's become a big fan of metal (Mastodon, old Metallica), neo soul (D'angelo, Lauryn Hill) and of course the Roots. As of late Mike has grown to love post rock (Sigur Ros, Explosions in the Sky) , more fusion (Snarky Puppy, Hiatus Kayote) and female based folk (Patty Griffin). This eclectic mix of influences has made Mike into a well rounded musician and a versatile bassist.

Mike's latest endeavor is to incorporate effects, textures, soloing, and looping into his playing, but of course never loosing that pocket based groove.
