ABOUT

I want to try something new. I'm looking for 2 more horns maybe to play mostly for fun but trying to land a weekly gig. It would be 3 horns and ireal Pro would be the rhythm. ??? Playing mostly for listening and mostly the old standards but not limited. Are you a horn player with gig background that might like to "try". Let me know.

I was a professional trombone player in the USAF for 20 years. I played with some great musicians. I had my own 4 & 5 piece combo for most of the time playing for dances in the clubs. We played all kinds of music, whatever the dancers wanted to hear. I also played keyboard. Keyboard was basically chords only for backing up the guitar. I played a gig at least once a week for over 12 years, well over 800 gigs. I gave up playing when I retired from the USAF 35 years ago.I'm sorry now.
Now I'm getting a small combo/group to play/practice for our own entertainment. (NOTE: As of 1-5-15, I'm looking for a tenor player from the old school. You know a good many head charts and want to play mostly for fun.) With a note in Craig's List, I now have a 7 piece group. The West University Swing Band (on FB) is made up of piano, bass, drums, guitar, xylophone, trumpet and me on trombone. Our music is rather broad such as Poinciana, Watermelon Man, Proud Mary, When Sunny Get Blue, Tea For Two, Sunny, Yesterday, Body and Soul, etc. Maybe you are a musician that played in the clubs either for dances or for listening in a big band or small combo. I am mainly a trombone player. You may not be working now and maybe like me, haven't been in a long time but would like to get back that direction for fun and/or money. Can you read music; meaning the written notes, key signatures and all chord symbols/changes if appropriate. Most any kind of music can/will be played in our group but we will lean towards Frank S. and Barbra S. types for entertaining ourselves and an audience if/and when there is one. Blues in C, F, G and B flat will be a big part of what we play The Preacher, Blues in the Closet and Symphony Sid. I like songs like Rainbow, Nearness, Georgia, Try a Little Tenderness, What's New, Misty, Laura, Rainy Day, Poinciana, Girl From Ipanema, More, Besame Mucho, Cherry Pink, Perfidia, Speak Low, Black Bird, Hello Dolly, Satin Doll, Sunny Side of the Street, Lady is a Tramp, Don't Get Around Much, Blueberry Hill, Please Release Me, Blue Velvet, Harbor Lights, Moonlight in VT, Party's Over, Black Orpheus, Yesterday (Beatles), I'll Be There, Crazy and the list goes on. I've got several big time fake books with over 4000 total songs, be it jazz, country, rock and music of 60's and 70's.
You don't have to be great to join the Katy group or to be a backup for the Swing Band but you do have to read music to some degree and know or be familiar with many/some of the songs listed and enjoy just playing. If your definition of a chart is a page with only the words to a song and a few simple chord changes, this group is probably not for you. Where I come from, the words are only important to vocalist. I want to be able to see the melody line with the chord changes, I don't sing.
If this sounds something like what you MIGHT be interested in, contact me. Pass this on if you know someone that might have an interest. I live in Katy.
If you know of a group that is already established like this locally, Please let me know.

I am also a very good West Coast Swing dancer and instructor. Trained by Mario Jr. My AOL Email is miltondance
