ABOUT

HEROES OF THE OPEN END are in need of a keyboardist who can multitask between the infinite tones of a synthesizer, all variations of the organ - from screaming and distorted to rippling and traditional, and the bombast of grand string arrangements. im sure piano could fit in there somewhere too. basically, we want you to be the final piece in a new kind of orchestra we're trying to create, which is one that updates the old-fashioned ensemble that dressed crooners like Sinatra and old Hollywood in such class and harmonic richness, before it was cruelly abandoned by pop culture like the senile old grandpa they left behind at woodstock - wandering around like a fool looking for bing crosby and a bathroom.

So, instead of settling for the chuck berry and beyond "guitar bass and drums" minimalism that the world's been devoted to since(as ass-kicking as its been - hell, we love the stones and guns and roses as much as anybody), we want to once again take advantage of the full musical possibilities only accessible through a full orchestral ensemble, and charge it with the punchy, in your face immediacy of rock and roll that gets you jumping around like a fool.

but instead of pulling another cheap retro move(ala the assembly line of new wave and garage rock reenactors, and infinite bands influenced by nothing but the beatles), we want to go beyond simply appropriating the approach of the classic string section, and instead merge it with all the instrumentation that has happened since.
and what you get is a truly modern orchestral ensemble that is caught up to the rest of pop culture. and over the anthems we are playing - big, constantly moving rock songs that sound like one giant chorus by always sticking to the pop ethic of a three minute single(even when they're 8 minutes or more), it will form a thick layer of nuclear guitars, atom bomb bass and drums, synthesizer electricity, and old-fashioned arrangement that will be so big, so colorful, and so loud that not only will people be forced to hear it, but they'll also wanna be PART of it again - the way they once were able to do when bands were big enough for everyone: bruce with his fist in the air, axl and slash tearing out sounds the size of earthquakes, freddie mercury summoning the crowd like a flamboyant preacher, Michael Jackson channeling the energy of every heartbeat in the room(check out man in the mirror from the grammies, or any human nature performance)...
as big as these bands were, and sounded, what really made them something special were the people listening, and screaming, and singing along, and just jumping around with the inner dumbass we all have but can only access through the charge of total rock and roll stimulation.
we're the return of the band who wants to take over the world - so if you think big like us, then we just might be right for each other.

check out our sonic manifesto "THIS IS RIGHT NOW" - its five minutes of what we're calling "confrontational audio" that explains - in a collage of music snippets, rants, and explosions(as well as a bit of other aggressive weirdness) anything i couldnt put into words right here.

thanks for reading through all this - or even just some of it, and we hope to hear from someone who's got ideas big enough to help us wake up this dead air.

we are hard workers who pratice alot and dont make any excuses - if we suck, we fix it, and if we dont, we leave like we're gonna knock everyone off their ass and then back on their feet the next time we play. we're not sceneters, or hipsters, or fashion rockers: we are regular guys with unique ideas, and the only people we know in this city are strangers that we have to win over. we respect the absolute standards of professional musicianship and the humility of total showmanship. we wont give into to the cheap allure of the lesser standards that the post hippie generations have allowed(although we love the music - we even cover the sex pistols once in a while). we are a throwback to the old-fashioned working band - but one that is willing to move forward, and there is nothing we are not ready to fight for: we are Rocky I, and we're gonna last the 12 rounds AND win the fight.

get in touch if you'd like to hear some full songs. but until we have a proper demo recorded(which we are preparing to do this month), the best way to represent ourselves is right in front of you, in your ears, with you joining in on the sound. we can ALWAYS prove it in person.
so take a chance and come down, and we might just make something happen together.

thanks,
mike, nick, ariel, and steve
