ABOUT

I've been singing since I was five. I've sung on Indie movie soundtracks, supervised music production for a movie, sung arias and art songs in a restaurant--where I organized the sets--and sung in church as a soloist and with choir (including children's choir.) I've performed true Celtic and Loreena McKennit in public but not for money. I would love to sing classic jazz and/or Latin jazz somewhere other than the shower or a friend's wedding. I listen to a lot of alternative and wouldn't mind doing that either though it would have to be covers; I don't have time to write lyrics right now. (I might be picky about what I sing though given my MFA is in creative writing.) My mother's Cuban so my Spanish isn't terrible. I studied classical voice in college (got a degree) though my sight reading isn't as good as I'd like it to be. (I haven't kept it up much.) I don't know how many gigs I've played--if, for example playing in the same place for three years is one gig or 300--but I'm going with a per night tally. I like being background music and/or coming up with special programs for social events. If you want specifics on teachers and venues/movies etc., let me know. I'm more comfortable with functional art than art for art's sake.

Influences

I'm not sure influences matter classically, but I like to listen to Renee Fleming. I like to listen to Kathleen Battle (but I'm a lyric.) I like Billie Holiday, Lisa Ekdahl, Marian Hill, as far as jazz/blues/lounge. Pink Martini and Edith Piaf are influences too though not necessarily in vocal technique. I think cross-over (ex. Sarah Brightman material) is fun. I like Celia Cruz but I'd have to work up to scatting like her. It would be really fun to sing Obradors. Alternative singers I like are Rachel Platten and Bjork.

Vocal cords and a well-rested body. Optional: music stand, some sheet music. I can do light percussion like hand drums and tambourine too but those are in storage.

Past Events

Too avoid getting too out of practice I go to karaoke every couple of weeks at a restaurant I like. People can hear me there.
