Rico Southee started showing an interest in music at the age of two at his home in Puerto Rico where his parents noticed him shaking his hands in the air when music was playing on the radio. It was during this time that his parents decided to cut a wooden broom handle in half and give it to him to play with just to see what he would do with it–sure enough he started strumming it like a guitar.

At the age of three his family moved to New York State and approximately three years later they provided him with a ukulele and a spanish guitar so their son could start taking guitar lessons. He would continue to take private guitar lessons till the age of twelve by which time his family moved back to Puerto Rico where their son was immersed into the traditional, folk and popular music of this wonderful Caribbean island.

At the age of fourteen after moving back to New York State he continued to pursue music and eventually started taking on part time jobs after school and during the summer which gave him the money to start taking guitar lessons again along with purchasing electric guitars, amplifiers, guitar effect pedals, microphones, percussion and stereo equipment which he would use to further develop his musicianship. It was also during this time that he would spend countless hours listening to and playing along with a variety of music in his room, listening to friend and family album collections, studying guitar method books, attending shows and concerts, playing with local musicians along with creating and recording music with composer, jazz and avant-garde guitarist and pianist Eric Ross.

In 1979 when he was nineteen he joined the United States Air Force at Hill Air Force Base, Utah working as a Administrative Specialist, attending college and in his spare time forming his first original band through auditions and rehearsals at the Hill Air Force Base Community Center. This band would eventually participate In the United States Air Force Talent Show competition at Hill Air Force Base, Utah winning 1st place Instrumental Band, Best Of Show and a trip to McClellan Air Force Base Command Talent Show competition, Sacramento California where the band would win 1st place Instrumental Band. They would continue on to compete in the final competition at the Worldwide Air Force Talent Show, Keesler Air Force Base Mississippi coming in second place Instrumental Band. He then auditioned and was asked to be a guitarist with the Premier Air Force Tops And Blue touring show which performs at Air Force Bases throughout the World.

In 1981 he continued to work as an Air Force Administrative Specialist at Sembach Air Base, Germany while continuing college, private music theory lessons, composing original music and becoming a member of the Soul Pop Group “Prism” playing military clubs and community centers throughout Germany.

In 1983 he auditioned for a guitar position at the United States Air Force Europe Band, Einsiedlerhof Germany and was hired as a guitarist for the 502nd Air Force Band, Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi Mississippi from 1984-1986. He then went on to become the guitarist for the United States Air Force Europe Band, Einsiedlerhof Germany from 1986-1992, the 530th Air Force Band, Atlanta Georgia in 1993, touring Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, Georgia, Dominican Republic, Norway, Sweden, United Kingdom, France, Denmark, Russia, Romania, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Crete, Portugal, Sardinia, Turkey and the Middle East.

In 1992 after an honorable discharge from the United States Air Force Europe Band, Einsiedlerhof Germany he decided to stay in Germany for one year playing with a variety of jazz and pop bands while spending a lot of his spare time researching music and audio engineering schools to attend in the United States and Canada . He would finally decide to move to Florida in 1993 where he would become the guitarist for the jazz band “Lisa Kelly And Take Note,” Jacksonville Florida, jazz guitarist for saxophonist Sam Rivers, Orlando Florida, primary guitarist for the 530th Air Force Reserve Band, Georgia to include studying Recording Arts at Full Sail University, Orlando Florida, improvisation and music theory at the University of North Florida, Jacksonville to include attending jazz performance workshops and concerts with Dianne Reeves, Dave Brubeck, Joe Henderson, Michael Brecker, Kenny Burrell, Count Basie Orchestra with Frank Foster and Bunky Green from 1993-1995.

In 1995 he moved back to Europe and began working as a guitarist with a variety of jazz, latin, gypsy, fusion, funk, soul, pop and rock bands performing clubs and pubs, corporate events, festivals and concerts throughout Europe, Cambridge and London. During this time he was also the guitar instructor for the Ramstein Community Center, Ramstein Air Force Base, Germany from 1995-2007, RAF Mildenhall Community Center and RAF Lakenheath Community Center, England from 2007-2010 and an independent recording artist composing, recording, producing and publishing four of his own CDs via performances in Europe with his duo and trio “Acoulectric” from 1998-2008.

In 2010 after living in England for approximately three years he moved to Colorado where he began performing as an independent professional guitarist at locations such as the United States Air Force Academy, Peterson Air Force Base, The Broadmoor, Stargazers Theatre & Event Center, Colorado Springs Fine Art Center, 2 South Food + Wine Bar, Rico’s Café And Wine Bar, Cucuru Galery Café, Motif Jazz Club and many other public and private venues throughout the state of Colorado. He was also the guitar instructor for the Peterson Air Force Base Youth Center, the Colorado Springs Conservatory of Music, Lucci Music and was also providing private guitar lessons at his home studio from 2010-2016.

In 2016 he moved back to England where he was hired as the guitar instructor for RAF Mildenhall as well as teaching private students at his home music studio. He has also performed as a solo guitarist at RAF Alconbury, RAF Mildenhall, RAF Lakenheath, Petrus Wine Bar, Casa Del Mar, Edmundo Lounge, Boosh Bar, Bury St Edmunds and The Snug Bar, Cambridge.

So whether its opening up for the Neville Brothers at the Jacksonville Jazz Festival, Florida or Maceo Parker at the Vienna De Castello Jazz Festival, Portugal–performing music at European open air festivals, American and European corporate events and concerts or playing with musicians such as sax players Sam Rivers and Derrick James, clarinet player Ed Wilber, pianist and composer Paul Amrod, drummer David “Fingers” Haynes, percussionist Dennis Bueno and Miguel Castro, jazz guitarist Wayne Wilkinson, bass player Rolf-Dieter Schnapka, Tiago Coimbra, Mario Bartone and Andy Burtschi, flute player and vocalist Burdette Becks and many more–you will find a professional guitarist who will give nothing more than his heart and soul to every musical occasion.
