ABOUT

Hello, My name is Rod Nightingale. I've recently relocated from Portland,Or and currently seeking some creative collaborating for a PHUNKY NEW Project. Hit me up ://rodnightingaleondrums/....

My name is Rod Nightingale and Well, I’m a Preacher’s Kid that Loves GOD! AMEN! Without him, I couldn’t keep MY SANITY in this CRAZY world! Coaching FOOTBALL and playing MUSIC are my PASSIONS in LIFE, between the two, I admire how they discipline and prepare YOU for it’s journey to come. Being a drummer, I play any & everything that moves me…. My EARS are very DIVERSE, plus I’m really into the GROOVE of the song, to me that’s where the PASSION comes from, as well as crafted LYRICS that make sense.
Since my first sticks at the age of 4, I’ve developed a groove that springs from a heavy, gospel upbringing from the days of my father’s church. Throughout school, elementary to college, I’ve broaden my music vocabulary, as well as won numerous awards pertaining to drumming. My talent and unique style has become a favorite among artists: local, national and worldwide. With a deeply, devoted FAITH in GOD coupled with a loving support from family and friends, I foster a humble musicianship and creativity for ALL genres of MUSIC.

In June 2008, DRUM MAGAZINE featured him in their "NEW BLOOD" section for drummers on the rise. Speaking of his ability to lay the GROOVE so deep that "His bandmates can drape their jamming doodles on, talk about Sound of the funky drummer in Portland,OR??"

Rod Nightingale is one of the PHUNKIEST Drummers in the Northwest. Residing in Portland, OR for the past 14 years, his drumming residency includes every style from Gospel to HipHop, Jazz to Rock. He's performed with: Linda Hornbuckle, Liv Warfield, BlackNotes, CopaCrescent, The Disciples in Song, Mt.Olivet Baptist Church, The Oregon Symphony.....and the list goes on, playing local to international venues and festivals worldwide. Also known as "Coach Rod", he has served as musical director and producer for several upcoming Indie projects as well: The C4 Influenz, Braille, Othello, Marv Ellis, Acoustic Minds, Keegan Smith and Kristina Rae.

Recently, I performed with the Oregon Symphony in their production of “ Gospel Christmas “, conducted by Dr. Charles Floyd. For the past 11 years, I’ve been a part of the concert series that consists of: a 3-piece rhythm section, 100-voice choir that accompanies the Oregon Symphony. Performing a vast range of Christmas tunes from Gospel to Jazz, including arrangements from some of Gospel’s elite ( Micah Stampley, Israel Houghton), the show leaves you with a willingness to carry out “Good will towards ALL men.” It sells out year after year…. In April of 2008, the Oregon Symphony conducted by Dr. Floyd, along with rhythm section & choir, will record a Christmas album set for release at Christmas ’08.
I still remain TRUE to my Gospel roots, playing regularly at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, been there the past 10 years. Two of the guys from the church, Chris Turner (Keys) & Jerry Harris, Jr. (He Plays everything), actually make up the 3-piece rhythm section that accompanies the symphony yearly, plus we play together every Sunday. Locally, I perform regularly with The Linda Hornbuckle Band, which consists of some of Portland’s finest musical pioneers: Janice Scroggins on Piano, Louis Pain on B-3 Organ, Doug Lewis on Lead Guitar and Randy Monroe on Bass. We’re lead by Portland’s premiere Gospel / Soul / Blues Diva, Mrs. Linda Hornbuckle. Locally, she can be seen at venues such as Jimmy Mak’s, the Gemini, Esther Short Park, as well as many wineries and festivals (Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival), nationwide. She’s been an anchor in Portland’s rich, music scene for over 30 years. Her past drummers include Bernard Purdie, Brian Foxworth, and the late-great Bruce Carter, so I count it a privilege to feel those guys shoes.
I also perform with two other groups locally, CopaCrescent ( a live, hip-hop project ) and Acoustic Minds ( a indie-soul, folk project ). This past Summer ’07, I went on a “West Coast Ride” with Acoustic Minds, where we performed 8 shows between Portland to California. The band is fronted by twin sisters, Jenni & Amanda Price, whose style ranges from Sheryl Crow to KT Tunstall, with band consisting of keys, guitar, bass and drums. We’re currently finishing their newest CD (1st with me playing with them ) to be released the early part of 2008. The other group, CopaCrescent, is my second-main gig. Formed close to a year ago, Copa is a healthy mix of live hip-hop blended with all genres, made in the image of the ROOTs, Ozomatli, & Black Eye-Peas (We’ve opened for All these guys!). We were featured in the July ’07 issue of Flossin’ magazine, “Hip-Hop Gone break it’s RUSTY CAGE.” CopaCrescent is a collective of gifted & young musicians hailing from various personal and musical backgrounds: Dan DiResta on Lead Guitar & Arrangements, Chaucer Geoff Barnes as Emcee, Chris Ponti on Bass and Steve Aman on Rhodes / Keys and myself. We’ve been playing shows locally and recording, basically getting ready for our CD release of “ Shelf-Life “ in early Spring ’08, as well as our debut at SXSW 2008. Finally, another group locally I perform with is the Portland Soul All-Stars, a k a “ The James Brown Tribute Band “. Formed in the Spring’ 07, the band includes some of Portland’s well-known players ( The Thara Memory Super-Band, the Mel Brown Septet, Curtis Salgado, and the Linda Hornbuckle Band ). Assembled to help offset hospital bills for local legend, trumpeter Thara Memory and honor the memory of James Brown, we did a benefit concert in March at Jimmy Mak’s that drew great revues. It was so well received that we also performed at the Safeway Waterfront Blues Festival this past July. In February 2008, we will be recording it Live at Jimmy Mak’s, It should be one to remember.
In the past, I’ve competed in the Drum-off sponsored by Guitar Center, winning at the local and regional levels, most recently as 2004. I’ve also been fortunate to travel and perform throughout Europe over the past 6 years with the Disciples in Song, a gospel group composed of family and friends. It’s always good “ to spread and share God’s Love with All.” Even more special, my pops and mom are founders of the group, so of course Naturally I would be included.
For the future, I plan on continuing to polish my craft, as well as expand my professional career; to make passionate good music for ALL to enjoy and to strive on being the best I can be, so that others may continue to see the GOOD in me.

Recently relocating to Houston, TX, Rod continues to hone his craft of becoming the BEST MUSICIAN he can be and keeping the PHUNK going strong!

So, Catch him at a stage near You!
