Much can change in five years’ time.
Had it been five years ago, the Scottsdale, Arizona based Shelly LaBash would not be found in pursuit of a singing/songwriting career. Having lived much of her life in the deep shadows of fear and self-doubt, her dreams of creating music became as distant as the midnight trains that passed through her childhood hometown of Albuquerque—their mournful whistles offering solace to a young girl who felt abandoned and alone in this world. Five years ago, Shelly’s eyes were opened to what she had long overlooked, and she found her worth anew in God’s abounding love.
“Love and fear can’t coexist,” says Shelly. In the absence of fear that had once crippled her, Shelly now writes songs that reach out to we who are broken and desperate—offering encouragement and the same opportunity to embrace love and forgiveness that she has been given. Shelly’s musical style combines the sultry tone of blues music with lyrical storytelling notoriously found in country music, drawing inspiration from artists such as Bobbie Gentry, Linda Ronstadt, and Karen Carpenter.
Having returned to Arizona Christian University to finish her undergraduate degree in music performance, Shelly studied and performed at the Contemporary Music Center in Brentwood, Tennessee, outside of Nashville, where she was crafting her songwriting and performing abilities as an artist.
Shelly is also an Arizona regional coordinator for N.S.A.I. (Nashville Songwriters Association International. As well as being an active songwriter, traveling often between Scottsdale and Nashville, she is a teacher, mentor, coach and speaker, helping songwriters to build their craft and find success. Shelly is currently writing a book to help songwriters as well. Her passion and heart lies with helping not only songwriters, but those who just need to find their worth and their dream and live to the fullest.
Likening her transformation to a speeding train, Shelly finds no reason to look back as her journey continues onward. “Loving and forgiving are two of the hardest things that any human being can do in this life. But if I love and forgive through God’s strength, I move forward and I become stronger,” says Shelly. The passion and heart behind her music creates a ministry in itself, connecting audiences through its redemptive qualities and offerings of hope in the wake of brokenness and hardship.
