ABOUT

SHOVELBELT Shovelbelt is power, intensity, comedy and sexuality. Everything a great rock band should be. Shovelbelt is the culmination of a yearlong process of weeding through tons of songs for our 2011 debut record. Shovelbelt is all about hard work, dedication, loyalty and the passion of five individuals working as one to keep pushing on. Shovelbelt is five brothers against the world. Huge guitars, massive drums and vocals everyone can relate to. I hope you enjoy the tunes….2011 will kick ass. -Shovelbelt MEMBERS Russ Lee Mickel AKA Rusty Cage Vocals. Singer, songwriter, drummer. With influences ranging from Clutch to Soundgarden to Melvins to C.O.C. to Them Crooked Vultures, Russ puts himself inside the story of our songs and takes the listener on a ride, willing or not! Russ is our power and strength. Russ is the voice of Shovelbelt. Joey Martinez Lead Guitars and Backing Vocals. Classically trained on the trumpet. Rock God. The ultimate stage performer. Joey was a member of Sinister Prank who signed with Miscellaneous Records in the 90’s. With influences ranging from Hendrix to Vai to BB King to Gary Busey (Gary Busey?), Joey is a raging inferno burning inside of Shovelbelt. James Olson Rhythm Guitars and Backing Vocals. The Prodigy. The Riff-Master. You think all the great riffs have been written? Think again. James is a font of outstanding and original riffs. James’ influences include Dillinger Escape Plan, GreenDay, Dave Brubeck Quartet, and Bootsy Collins. Dean Alen Bass. An excellent guitar player in his own right, Dean’s bass playing adds essential hugeness (hugeness?) to the Shovelbelt sound. Dean plays exactly what Shovelbelt’s music calls for. Dean’s influences include the classic rock greats as well as Alice in Chains and Queensryche among others. Dean is completes the Shovelbelt sound. J.J. Tantillo Drummer, Backing Vocals. Writer/arranger, multi-instrumentalist, recording engineer/producer. J.J. is the foundation on which the mighty Shovelbelt rests it’s ample backside. A former Jeff Campitelli(Joe Satriani) student, J.J.’s influences range from James Brown to Faith No More to Pantera. Not interested in how many notes he can play, but the quality and importance of each note, J.J. is Shovelbelt’s big-block engine.
