ABOUT

Marine Corps Music consists of twelve bands and a drum and bugle corps. These bands are stationed at the major commands of the Marine Corps and are located in Hawaii, Southern California, the Carolinas, Georgia, Virginia, Louisiana, and Japan. Regardless of the ensemble - ceremonial band, concert band, show band, combo, or chamber ensemble - Marine musicians enjoy the satisfaction and experience gained through full-time performance with a professional musical organization in national and international venues. As a Marine musician you may qualify for an enlistment bonus, a choice of duty station, accelerated promotion to the rank of sergeant (E-5), and 100% tuition assistance while enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program.

Woodwinds and Brass

We require each of our applicants to have mastery of the following components. They are:
Scales (10%) – Woodwind and Brass musicians must perform all Major scales along with all three forms of the minor scales from memory
Solo (40%) – Solos must be medium-advanced – advanced (Grade 4 or 5) and must be standard repertoire for your instrument. The minimum length is five minutes – the maximum is 10 minutes - and must contain two contrasting excerpts.
Sightreading (50%) – Sightreading will consist of excerpts from solos, studies, and/or concert band repertoire. Additionally, trumpets, trombones, and saxophones will be required to sightread in the swing style.

Percussion

Because of the variety in our performances, Marine Bands require its percussionists to audition on concert and rudimental snare, drum set, and mallet percussion. The audition requirements are:
Snare Drum (40%) – Percussionists must perform all standard American rudiments from memory along with a concert and rudimental snare solo. Sightreading of various excerpts will be included.
Drum Set (50%) – Applicants must be able to perform various drum set styles to include swing, rock, funk and a variety of Latin rhythms. Percussionists must also sightread from a kick sheet in a variety of styles.
Mallets (10%) – Percussionists must perform major and minor scales from memory in addition to sightreading various mallet excerpts

Guitar and Electric Bass

Guitar and Electric Bass players must be able to read chord changes (i.e. C, amin7, dmin7, G7, C) and construct and perform stylistically appropriate patterns in a variety of styles to include swing, rock, and funk. Guitar and bass players are also required to play scales and sightread in variety of styles. For more information on the guitar and bass auditions, please contact the placement director.
