ABOUT

Hi, my name is Stephanie. I am a 23-year-old mezzo-soprano singer. I began my musical journey as a young child singing in the church. My father was also involved in the music scene as a bassist and guitarist. He played in a blue grass band (The Original Kickin' Grass Band) and in the church for several years. He is why I started singing in church at such a young age.

By the age of 12 my parents noticed my burning passion for music. I asked my mom if I could take music lessons, and mom found Melanie Horton. Mel changed my life - might I even say -saved it. I was at one of my lowest points. I was in middle school at the time, and I was heavily bullied. Having music as an outlet gave me purpose and having Mel to confide in changed my self-esteem. Unfortunately, Mel passed in 2017 but she lives vibrantly in my memories, and I credit her with aiding in much of my success - in multiple areas of my life - not just music.

During my time working with Melanie Horton, I was also given the pleasure to work with her best friend and business partner Crissy Oravits. The two owned Music and More studios in Goldsboro, NC. I attended recording camps there in 2014 and 2015. By doing so, I began an interest in sound engineering. During my days at Music and more, I also took singing, piano and guitar lessons - and I dabbled in ukulele and bass as well.

From the years 2017-2020 I began performing song covers. In 2019 I had the pleasure of performing at events like Relay for Life and United Way Goldsboro's Taste of Wayne.

In January 2020 I moved to Wilmington and attended UNCW, where I joined the Seahawkappellas (the college's co-ed acapella group). I went onto become the vice president in 2022!

Unfortunately, Covid has put a halt on my live performances, but I am looking to get back at it. A pro from covid, is that I have been able to dabble more into sound engineering and creating song covers for be! I am by no means an expert at sound engineering or instruments, but it is something I am interested in expanding upon!

Influences

My early influences are tied into gospel and Christian rock. However, I have evolved farther from those roots over the years. I grew up with a musician father, so I listened to about any genre you can think of. Our favorites to listen to together were The Beatles, The Temptations, Pearl Jam, and a lot of classic rock artists.

In middle school I listened to a lot of mainstream pop and emo genres. Then by high school, I discovered Amy Winehouse. I still listened to a lot of mainstream pop during this time, but also indie music, 90s music, R&B, and underground artists.

By the time I reached college I discovered Broadway and became immersed with a lot of the music in that scene. I also became more immersed in classic rock again.

I basically have been influenced by several genres in various ways. So, when it comes to singing - I like to stick to acoustic to keep it raw and simple. But I am always open to experimenting in music. I love music and I really try to keep an open mind with it!
