Austin Musicians
Beginning its musical traditions in the late 1960’s, Austin has become known as the “Live Music Capital of the World” and the adopted hometown of country legend Willie Nelson. In addition, the city’s famous 6th Street sports numerous clubs and bars that showcase music from locally and nationally recognized bands every night of the week.
Some of the biggest draws to the Austin music scene are the South by Southwest and Austin City Limits Music festivals which bring spectators from all over the country. These events have featured performances by countless headlining groups which have included appearances by Texas natives Los Lonely Boys, Lyle Lovett, and Asleep at the Wheel. Beginning in 1975, and the inspiration for the festival created in its namesake, The Austin City Limits show, broadcasted by PBS, has presented over 500 artists of various genres with acts such as Brooks & Dunn, Jack Johnson, and Stevie Ray Vaughn.
Between the months of April and October, the city maintains its abundance of music by putting on free concerts for the public on the plaza of City Hall in addition to the regular musical events performed at Zilker Hillside Theater.
One of the best known venues around the area is Antone’s which has seen performances from the likes of John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, and B.B. King. Emo’s, another well known club on 6th Street, has showcased concerts by Modest Mouse, Rancid, and Johnny Cash. Austin is also home to the once standing Armadillo World Headquarters which has come to be recognized as one of the most historic venues in music history. Throughout its existence, it saw shows from such as acts as Ray Charles, Bruce Springsteen, and ZZ Top, hosted a live album recording by Frank Zappa, and was the first American venue to be played by AC/DC.
