Hi, my name is Mike Johnson, aka Old Man Johnson. I’m the singer, songwriter, and guitarist for Akron the area rock band The Cardinal Roos, “Big Sticks” Susan Harden is my scrappy little drummer and she can’t perform with the best of ‘em!!
My influences are mostly seventies and eighties rock and pop bands and I have some eighties metal influences too. The Cardinal Roos's music belongs to the rock genre but what makes our music fresh is the elements of other genres added to our recipe.
I left my true love of music earlier in my life to concentrate on career goals and to pursue other interests. I was also struggling with health issues. Susan also followed a career path and was dedicated to life with her family. We are now focusing on our first love!
We are currently looking for a bass player.
What is my role?
I am the founder, leader, singer/songwriter, and guitarist for the band, and I also do the band’s graphics and marketing.
What can I do?
I can really punch out vocals in a wide range and I have perfect pitch. I love to do harmonies and can sing them fluidly and naturally. I can develop style easily, and have a great ear for melody, harmony, mood, rhythm, beat, and feel.
I can create songs and learn them quickly. I often write songs about love, and my goal is to let my audience know they are not alone. I have a good "write" hook, and my lyrics are poetic, powerful, catchy and visual. I sometimes use spiritual symbolism and imagery, although we are not a Christian rock band per se.
I am a rhythm player. I'm not skilled in a highly technical way, nor do I know notation, tablature or advanced theory. My guitar playing is good, original, creative, and clean, and lends itself more to creative songwriting than soloing. The great Chet Atkins once said, "I never made a dime above five," in reference to the number of chords he used when writing his songs. The Cardinal Roos sticks to this philosophy as well; we use a few more chords though : D
The samples above are rough cuts and are only a similar idea to what the finished album cuts will sound like.

TAKE ME HERE AWAY SONG
TAKE ME HERE AWAY SONGI did this song when I was younger and my brother, Mark played the bass and drums on this tune and recorded it for me. It's mysterious and moody and really about what I'm all about, and that's contemplating God, whatever that is.
ALL IN THE FAMILY (Solo, Rough Cut)
ALL IN THE FAMILY (Solo, Rough Cut)A rough solo for my upcoming song All in the Family. It turned out to be more distorted than the final will be, but I like the direction it's going.
