ABOUT

Getting back into music after many, many years away..I used to be known as a decent bass player and guitarist. If you are looking for Van Halen or Jaco Pastorius, it is not me (wish it were). I am really into writing and composition. Despite being self taught, I know a good amount of music theory. I have a lot of (what I think are) great ideas, but I need practice and someone off of whom I can bounce the ideas to see if they float. You know, like a boat.

I don't take music too seriously in a commercial sense- the age of the rock star is over. Maybe we can come up with something interesting, though. My main interest is alternative/grunge, but I enjoy fusion jazz as well as a really eclectic mix of world music, ranging from African music to Norteño to klezmer.

What I lack in recent practice, rhythm (I don't handle syncopation or odd time signatures well (frowning)) and general technical ability, I make up for in creativity and open-mindedness as well as my knowledge of theory. I want to break away from the folksy, open chord mindset on guitar and have finally begun experimenting with alternative tunings.

We might jam if we can fit into each other's schedules (if you are in the north Bronx or Yonkers), or we may just communicate and exchange ideas. If you are not that technically accomplished and would like a partner to grow with, I might be a good fit for you. Let's invent a new genre!

It would be especially nice to find a good keyboard player in the style of Ray Manzarek who could allow me to switch between guitar and bass.

Influences

The Police (Andy Summers inspired me to begin teaching myself), U2, Men at Work, Tom Petty, Soundgarden, Nirvana, Quiet Riot (yes, QUIET RIOT was an early influence on me), the Doors, Cream, Hendrix, Amsterdam Klezmer Band, various Spanish, Latin American, and African artists.

Ok, brace yourself- if forced between the Beatles and the Stones, I am a Stones guy. Yes, I admire Harrison and acknowledge the Beatles songwriting, but I prefer the grooves of the Stones and view Richards as a (perhaps non-virtuoso?) genius guitar player. Don't kill me!

Fender electric and acoustic guitars, Fender Squier bass (my amp supply is running low at this time). I have no microphones or recording equipment, but hopefully that will change as my budget allows.
