Enigmatic self-taught musician heavily influenced by English progressive rock from the '70s. That era showed me the emotional range music was capable of, from delicate wonder to soul-searching intensity to the outside edges of rage. Trying to inject those emotional qualities into electronic music as well.
I play almost exclusively my own songs, many of which are based around fingerpicking on my 12-string. Most of my songs were written in the '70s and '80s, acoustic-based but tweaked with echo and other eccentricities. I've also crafted some songs on Melody Assistant, a notation program allowing manual input on multiple staves with individualized effects.
There is often an unsettling edge to my rhythm guitar, straying far from standard rhythms where percussion has to accentuate what I put on the table, not merely padder along in standard 4/4 time and feel. If you like rhythm a la Beastie Boys, we won't be in sync. My songs don't start with percussion, and sometimes don't lend themselves to much of it other than as a dash of spice.
I like lapsing into the quiet, haunting spaces that progressive rock allows for. I have an ambient side, what I call new age with teeth. Leaving a feeling of a slightly disturbing undercurrent is preferred over merely placid meandering.
I wasn't born to perform, so not inclined to be a stage strutter. What I don't present in attitude at first glance is made up for by the truth and intensity of my music. That's why I call myself Improbable Todd; you don't get what you might expect. I'm not a cover clone looking to make a buck off the prowess of predecessors. I want to grip the audience, make them search, make them feel, engage more than just their feet.
I'm looking to find bass, keyboard, drums, lead guitar and/or flute/sax/violin to flesh out my challenging musical intentions. Heavy only when I need to be, consistently unexpected in style, chords, and emotional feel. If you've got prog chops, we should talk.
