ABOUT

I spent years in musical theatre and choir, learning to sing with correct tone, tongue to teeth, breathing from the back and diaphragm, mouth open vertically, phrasing, and extreme attention to annunciation. But as I learned more and more about classical singing I realized I didn't like it- especially the vibrato and formal nature of the performances. And musical theatre makes me gag... I got into grunge and classic rock, with singers like Jim Morrison, Eddie Vedder, Plant, Mercury. I love the general vibe they send, the stage presence, and their singing tone. Then I realized that most of them couldn't reproduce what they made in the studio live, they usually blew out their voices. Because of this, they are often behind the beat trying desperately to hold on- (not creating music). I realized I needed to develop the proper breathing and spacing technique to keep vocal fatigue to a minimum. With proper training in the Alexander technique, and teaching myself to maximize sound without straining, I feel I have achieved this. Nobody gets to feed me through auto-tune

In my own performance I combine elements of both grunge rock and classical, maintaining choir tone (mostly baritone for power sections) and then for softer songs I usually prefer a lighter tenor tone. I try to keep vibrato for extended notes, using it to close off a phrase as a stylistic element. I write my own lyrics and perform them at open mics. Spoken word is fun for me when its called for in the music.
