Gabriel Butterfield (Creative Rhythmist, Singer, Songwriter)

Gabriel Butterfield grew up surrounded by music, traveling on tour buses, sleeping behind amps, with stints of his life interspersed amidst the likes of many of today’s music giants … and undeniably has music in his blood. Gabriel, son of Paul Butterfield, was born in the South Side of Chicago at home September 9th, 1965.

His musical training began with the teachings and inspirations of his father followed by his self taught goals and Berkeley, California musical endeavors. In his early years he began with 3 years of piano and violin, followed by music theory and guitar in High School. In the early 80’s at the age of 17, Gabriel was invited to be part of a music project and this was his first recording session with a well-known bay area ethereal Jazz group and Gabriel was recorded on Northwind-- “Circles in the Fire” with Garry MacCready on tenor sax, Doro Reeves, acoustic piano, Lrin Noller, 12 string guitar, dumbek drum with Gabriel Butterfield orchestrating his original idea of playing an African slit drum on top of an open ended floor tom with a EV omni directional mic under it. Producing concert hall full sound in a small studio space.

Gabriel's first drum training was with Rick Walker—renowned drummer and founder of the "Tao Chemical" and "Tao Rhythmical" bands, "World Collides" and others. During this time he began working with "Tao Rhythmical" with Rick Walker and Author Hall, and later as a "roady" for Neil Young, Johnny Winters and others. College led to vocal training and the study of electronic systems synthesis.

In the mid-eighties Gabriel was invited to sit in with Flora Purim and Airto Moreira at "Coconut Grove" on the Santa Cruz Boardwalk. During the late 80's he sat in with Charlie Musselwhite at O.T. Price's in Aptos, CA. In 1987 Gabriel performed at "The Last Day Saloon" in San Francisco with members of "The Doobie Brothers" and numerous Santa Cruz icons in Tribute to Gabriel's father—"Paul Butterfield".

This East/West Coast performer has appeared at such well-known locations as: "The Catalist", "Civic Auditorium", "Henflings", and "Coconut Grove" in Santa Cruz, "Key Stone" and "Last Day Saloon" in San Francisco, "The Lonestar", "Downtime", and "Le Bar Bat" in New York City, "The Cabaloosa" and the "Heart and Soul Club" in New Paltz, NY, "Club Euro" in Provincetown, Cape Cod, Mass., "Tinker Street Café" and "The Joyous Lake" in Woodstock NY, "The Westport Blues Festival" and "The Monterrey Blues Festival"; as well as other well-know locations throughout the East and West Coasts that are far too numerous to list.
Gabriel has opened for such artists including but not limited to the Neville Brothers, Bone Daddies, Fish Bone, Johnny Winters, and Spastics. From the early 80's until 1990 Gabriel primarily performed on the West Coast. From 1990 to 1999 Gabriel resided in Woodstock, NY where he performed as a freelance drummer and as a member of his own band named "The Butterfield Band". During 1990 to 1994 the Woodstock music scene was very active. It was a bustling cloister for both upcoming and renowned musicians and Gabriel performed nightly at clubs throughout the vicinity.
During the time period of 1996 to 1997, Gabriel did several small East Coast tours with his own band—"The Butterfield Band", which included members—Ted Ore (of Swollen Monkeys, Children of the Earth), David Castiglione (of The Zen horns, Otis rush, Grace Jones) Harvey Sorgen (of Hot Tuna, Paul Simon, The Memphis Pilgrims) Peter Buetner (of Karl Berger, Abdullah Ibrahim, Gary Windo) and Mike Windfield (who toured with Paul Butterfield, Led Zeppelin, Mothers of Invention, Muddy Waters). While in Woodstock, Gabriel also performed with the renowned "Pee Wee Ellis" at "The Tinker Street Café".
While in Woodstock, Gabriel resided with his fiancé and manager—Salli Squitieri, in a three story house on 18 acres of Wildlife Refuge with an attached Studio meeting their requirements for all their creative endeavors. This enabled Gabriel to explore further
his drumming techniques, perform, rehearse and create new songs and sounds. Gabriel and Salli played a major role in the community producing music benefits and fundraising extravaganzas for Woodstock community members.
Gabriel has performed for, organized and produced countless fundraiser/benefit events both on the East and West coasts.

Started in 1993, The Gabriel Butterfield Sunday Night Woodstock Blues Jam" at "The Joyous Lake" in Woodstock NY became an immediate success and was rapidly known as the one of the largest hot spot events in the area. Woodstock, which was known for its many Recording Studios brought in a vast amount of name performers who sought out Gabriel's Blues Jam, likewise luring the extensive collective talent pool and esteemed local Woodstock musicians.

In 1999 Gabriel Butterfield and Salli Squitieri moved to Key West Florida where they presently reside. Together they continue to organize and participate in assorted benefits and fundraisers. They have been actively involved with community events with both performing and visual arts. Gabriel continues to freelance as a drummer and by popular demand sits in with countless bands. He has been writing song lyrics and where ever Gabriel may be, you can be assured that there is a music project on the horizon.

In 2002 Gabriel performed at "The Blue Poodle Music & Art Festival" (orchestrated by Jamie and Victor Forbes), with Sam Lay, Mark Nataflin and Chris Parker—previous members of (his father's band) "The Paul Butterfield Blues Band", in South Hampton in Long Island NY. Gabriel Butterfield arrived August 17th, 2002 and was taking directly to radio, magazine & video interviews.
This event one of Jamie and Victor’s many events was a Multi-media Tribute Exploration on the Bob Dylan/Paul Butterfield connection and a benefit for "The Waterkeepers Alliance".

His time in Key West has been active with performances, free lancing as a drummer and orchestrating and assisting with benefits & fundraisers.

In 2005 "The Blues Hall of Fame" in CA inducted Gabriel and Salli into "The Blues Hall of Fame" as Official Ambassadors representing the Woodstock NY and Key West FL areas.

Gabriel Butterfield and Salli Squitieri have orchestrated many multi-media events including the "Music & Art to Benefit Children" project, which benefited an array of non-profit children's organizations and 14 non-stop days showcasing renowned performers
from around the country as well as upcoming local artists.

Additionally, Gabriel & Salli have orchestrated a series of "The Gabriel Butterfield Blues Sessions" featuring a vast of amount of performers in Blues Jam style performance and generally dedicated a local cause.

December 2004, Gabriel and Salli unveiled their PBFS Educational Archival Exhibit representing segments of Paul's life and career as part of a three day Multi-media extravaganza at three separate venues in Key West Florida beginning at "The Key West Hard Rock Café" on December 17th—Paul's birthday-a day when radio stations nationwide joined to honor Paul & PBFS by playing Paul's music throughout the day.

Butterfield’s Roadhouse is an old fashioned down to earth music venue for local and national artists, a special venue for traveling artists and performers, special events and jams.

Salli and Gabriel are currently featuring and introducing “The Paul Butterfield Fund and Society” and exhibits that will be rotating artifacts and continually growing.

"The Paul Butterfield Fund and Society Educational Archival Exhibit is one of our signature projects," Gabriel states. The exhibit represents segments of Paul Butterfield’s life and career, which currently includes memorabilia -- posters, handbills, tickets, art work, photographs, music, videos and personal artifacts of Paul's; representing the arts and artists of that era.

The PBFS Educational Archival Exhibit was unveiled as part of a three day multi-media extravaganza on Dec 17th, 2004 at the Key West Hard Rock Cafe on Paul's birthday -- a day when radio stations nationwide joined in memory of Paul and support of PBFS, by playing Paul Butterfield’s music throughout the day.

This collection continues to grow & they hope to have it on the road at various special events in the very near future. A segment of the exhibit is permanently displayed at Butterfield’s Roadhouse.
