ABOUT

Intro: Back when jobs were plentiful, I used to be in high-energy dance bands on the road touring the hotel chains & dance hall venues, as well as free-standing live entertainment bookings. I set up "Top Talent Temporaries", an agency that provided gigs to Houston area professional musicians who were much needed in a pinch.

2024
It's totally different for musicians, nowadays. There's so much marketing involved! I also found that places expect the bands to audition for free, or to bid on a gig (really????)
It's insulting to our profession that the lowest paid musician gets the job.
Welcome to the age of disvalued musicians.
I am having a hard time getting over the disappointment that the business appears to be collapsing, as far as hiring live bands - it seems clubs/venues just have saturated the brick & mortar rooms for solo musician booked acts & they want to pay just a few bucks for a guitarist strumming a couple of sets, or a duo that bores you with weak vocals & worn out songs. The audiences are settling for this, because it's the only acts some venues are providing.
What happened to the days of being booked for 3 or 4 hours and getting paid what you're worth? When did it become satisfactory for solo artists to plug in their laptop, mic & speaker for work?
(& they do get all their gigs booked up!)
It's drastically changed in the live music entertainment industry, I'm sure you music veterans would agree.
Do you like setting up and tearing down 2-3 times a day in the hot sun or the freezing bitter cold? Apparently, the ones who book us think this is the way it should go - why are bands settling for this?
Who likes to haul in your gear, set up & tear down and set up & tear down again? Explain it to me. I remember when a "One Nighter" meant you made enough money to pay your entire month's apartment rent!
There's an expression;
"If it were that easy, everyone would be doing it".
Well, HELLO?
Everyone IS doing it! ........just venting.

Current:
I'm in New Philadelphia, Ohio.
In 2022 I was hired as front vocalist for a highly established local area 20-pc Big Band, doing seasonal jobs. But, now I'm looking to get a quiet situation, a smaller group, duo, anything that can get me working more often than just 4 months out of the year.

Here is my profile from 2018:
I was seeking a dinner club type of gig, back in 2016. I just wanted to sing pretty songs that people recognize, do some of the old classic standard stuff . . .
So, I merged with a keyboard player to give it a try. We gave it 1½-2 yrs in the greater Stark Co. area of Ohio and surrounding towns.
We discovered the wineries didn't pay enough money for our duo, & finding the "supper clubs" are rarely around these days, seems that those venues are far & few in between for this part of Ohio I'm in.
(Are wineries the new "lounge"?) ...What happened to lounge work gigs? It was a haven for musicians to draw a following.

I like singing 70's R&B funk, disco, power ballads and some American Songbook light jazz standards, 60's pop, Motown, some ladies of the 80's, 70's Classic light rock & a there's a couple of (a little more recent) dance/pop tunes that were added in my list.
Seeking a situation that is somewhat local in my area. I don't mind driving 30-45 minutes to a job, that's pretty much expected.

Bio from 2015 when I first joined Bandmix:
[ I am a mature experienced professional looking to get back in the industry with a keyboard player who can program music or use backing tracks for a duo situation - possibly a 3rd member, to play along, in addition be able to sing and also play freestyle by request, if ever needed. I am open to consider the opportunity to form a trio, but for now, I was not planning on getting back into a larger band, .
I know all the standards, piano bar, 80's R&B, 60's-90's, lounge as well as cover music from the disco/dance era. I have an excellent ear for harmony and I am creative with my own style.
I used to be on the road touring with Hi-energy Top 40 dance bands doing copy music, then I got off the road to do originals, I even wrote and recorded a song with some Cleveland, OH area accomplished musicians.
After a long break from singing as a means of making a living, I am anxious to entertain again now. I love laying trax of all my own backup vocals too..
I prefer to stay local with a serious mature musician who has a sharp ear and equipment.
