ABOUT

Joe Collins is a cellist from Atlanta, Georgia who is currently studying cello performance at the University of North Carolina, School of the Arts with Dr. Brooks Whitehouse. With several years of gigging experience, heâ??s played a wide variety of classical repertoire, including orchestral, chamber, and solo pieces at different universities in North Carolina while also playing musicals and other modern compositions. Joe began learning music at nine years old and started privately studying cello with Spencer Brewer at fifteen. While understanding the importance of a strong foundation of good fundamentals, he stresses the importance of exploring the musicality of oneâ??s playing through oneâ??s own musical fluency in order to test the limits of notes on a page. Aside from cello, Joe is also an avid guitarist, bassist, and drummer, and he has performed with several local bands throughout Winston-Salem. He enjoys combining his learned classical and jazz technique with a variety of different genres, including anywhere from classic jazz, classic rock and R&B, hardcore punk, and even death metal. Past projects include collaborating with musicians in The Spins, Untold Salem, Maybe Tomorrow, and OK Sweetheart. Joe currently holds a position as drummer, guitarist, and co-songwriter for the Space Cadet Orchestra, which he tends to classify as a jazz/funk fusion trio. Along with his performance career, Joe takes pride in his passion for education, and he works with the AmeriCorps program Artistcorps to help give back to the communities surrounding UNCSA through arts education of high-needs students. Although not all of his educational work is associated with ArtistCorps, some of his projects include teaching private cello and guitar lessons, leading group sectionals for orchestral ensembles, leading group classes for guitar technique and cello technique, and teaching general music to preschool classes.
