I've been playing for 7 years although I've more recently gotten back into it after a 2 year hiatus of inconsistent playing. I cannot read music at all however I have never let it stop me and having mentioned that Jimi Hendrix and Paul McCartney cant read music either. I am an absolute classic rock junkie and would love to be in a group that emphasizes that style with the powerful sound of todays modern equipment although beggars cant be choosers and I am willing to work with other types of groups. Just because I am so big on classic rock does not mean it is all I listen to, I also love the blues (all the way from Robert Johnson to BB King to Stevie Ray Vaughn), classical, and even ancient music. While the guitar is my main weapon I also can play drums fairly decent, and I have a tiny grasp on piano. And I would be a liar if I didnt say it but being in a band also gives me a reason and a way to pay for expensive gear without looking like an asshole, I mean seriously why would I buy a 1,000 + dollar guitar unless I was in a band. My heaviest influences are Led Zeppelin, Cream, Black Sabbath, and Queen. As far as solo musicians go my heaviest influences are Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, and Jimi Hendrix.
