ABOUT

I never set out to be a songwriter. That was God’s plan. I simply concluded that if He gave me the notion and the ability, there must be a pretty good reason. I love talking to people and hearing the stories of their lives—an interest that developed during my career as a photographer. Through the lense, I learned that people are all the same—connected by our brightest hopes, wildest dreams, and deepest fears. We each have songs in our hearts, and for most, they will remain unwritten. I, however, have been fortunate enough to have mine brought to life.

The best of my songs well-up from an unconscious awareness
of past vulnerabilities, present complexities, and future aspirations. Once the idea has permeated my consciousness, I begin to add lyrics, music, and structure—but I am always fearful that the process of developing the song will degrade the purity of the original thought. To that end, I try to use the least number of most commonly understood words. It’s a painstaking craft that I truly enjoy.

I recently submitted a catalog of songs to The Library of Congress. The songs in this collection represent over 22 years of work, from 1992 through 2014. And while I am extremely honored to be the person through which this body of work was completed, there is still more work to be done—on my own, and in collaboration with the songwriters, musicians, and vocalists I continually meet. I sincerely hope that one of my songs becomes “your song,” comforting and encouraging you through the trials and triumphs of life.
