ABOUT

My Musical Philosophy

Music and learning an instrument is about removing barriers to creativity and creative ideas are born from experimentation.

Overcoming harmonic and physical obstacles to creativity will allow you to explore more imaginative possibilities and play what you hear in your head.

Our success in removing these obstacles depends on many things; inherent ability, intellect, commitment, patience and passion, to name a few.

What many musicians don’t realize is that professionals are sensational because of their command and mastery of the fundamentals.

Using the guitar as an example, I believe that a knowledge base of chords, inversions, scales and arpeggios and the dexterity to effortlessly call on and combine these fundamentals, at will, in a fluid way, is what a guitarist should work towards.

Playing guitar effectively and seeing expedited progress, requires focusing your efforts.

Determining what you need to focus on begins with asking yourself; what type of music do I want to play? The requirements to play folk, pop, classic rock, metal, blues, jazz or classical are very different.

Also, do you aspire to be a classic rock weekend warrior, or a studio musician? These choices will determine whether your time might be better spent refining your technique and licks, or practicing sight reading, for example.

Your ability on your instrument alone would be very unsatisfying if you didn't apply what you know to creating, or recreating, actual songs.

It is also very important for a musician's development to play with other musicians and ultimately, perform in front of an audience.

In closing, I think that we should all have a thirst for knowledge and cultivate an ambition towards a decent level of expressive fluency.
