Leddie Garcia with Bruce Odland and Sam Auinger’s, “Sounds From The Vault”, a playable orchestration of virtual instruments for the Chicago Field Museum, won the Gold Muse Award from the Association of American Museums. Leddie played the key role of Principal Percussionist and Committee Advisor. Letting “outsider”,
professional musicians like Leddie Garcia, come in and play these priceless artifacts is almost unheard of in the museum world. With his diligent efforts, Leddie mastered an instrument called a friction block. “I’d never seen a friction block”, said Garcia, “so I continued to experiment with this unusual instrument”. At some point, I started rubbing it, and it finally spoke to me, making this ululating sound”. Leddie played 32 of 50 priceless instruments collected for this award-winning exhibit.
