LotharBass - Music Under the Radar
Leonardo da Vinci once said, “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.” Sometimes we forget that great beauty can come out of simplicity. There’s a certain raw honesty and fragility, especially when it comes to art and music, that’s expressed in simplicity and that can’t be duplicated by more complex means. Bob Dylan had it on his debut album in 1962. And you can hear that same quality, albeit in a different way, from LotharBass.

Lothar was born in Paramaribo, Suriname. At the age of fourteen he moved to the Netherlands with his parents and learned to play the guitar on his own a year later. He eventually switched to bass when a band he was playing with needed a bass player.

Lothar went on to play in numerous groups and toured in Amsterdam and Belgium. Now he’s finally getting around to doing some recording. His current group includes Ashni Dance on backing vocals and Jopie Jacobus on drums and percussion.

Lothar is currently involved in trying to help some of the indigenous people of Surinam whose land rights have come under attack. Apparently, the government of Surinam is still allowing gold mining and logging companies to expropriate land in violation of a 2007 ruling by the Inter-American Court for Human Rights.

The song Live Under the Sky, which has a very poetic quality to it, is his first recorded release. Lothar says of the song, “It reminds me of my childhood in Surinam living with different cultures and my life, picking myself up and going forward.”
