ABOUT

I'm a melodic and groove-oriented player looking for smart, creative people to make original music with (and play some choice covers when they feel right). Interested in gigging 1-2 times a month and doing it purely for fun.

The three highest compliments I've ever had about my playing:
"You are the balls of the band." - from a retired Air Force General in the audience.

"I've never heard a bass player who moved me emotionally like that. I didn't know it could be played with that much feeling." - from a friend of a friend listening to an improv jam.

"You make it easy to play." - from the best drummer I ever met, and who I'll never be as good as no matter what he says. Also from the last guys I had the pleasure of making music with here in town.

I'm nothing flashy--I like Flea but I ain't him. But if you're looking for a guy to play one-note lines while everybody else has all the fun, I ain't him either. I can learn most things fast, but I don't have a huge backlog of covers memorized. My favorite thing to do is just start playing together, and seeing where the vibe takes us.

Influences

I like a lot of different bands and styles. I don't dig new country much, but I respect old country, folk, bluegrass, roots. Just not my style. I think influences are less important than finding chemistry, getting musicians to listen to each other, stretch and grow, try new ideas, and play music they would want to hear if they went out to a show.

Not sure I sound like any of these, but all of these bands have worked on my ear: (The usual) Zepplin, Who, Yes, Floyd, Rush, Stones, Beatles, Hendrix, Police, U2, Cure, Chili Peppers, Rage, Talking Heads, Beastie Boys, Widespread Panic, The Clash, Morphine, Steely Dan, Phish, STP, Traveler, Allman Bros, REM, Wilco, James Brown and the JB's, P Funk. (The less usual) Tragically Hip, Bowie, Galactic, XTC, Soul Coughing, Elvis Costello, Blackalicious, Ice Cube, Tribe Called Quest, Brand New Heavies, The Pretenders, The Hold Steady, G. Love and Special Sauce, Beck, Shiner, Oingo Boingo, Weather Report, Cassandra Wilson, MeShell NdegeoCello, Crowded House, Herbie Hancock, Christian McBride, Medeski Martin & Wood.

Back in the day, I started with Maiden and Sabbath and AC/DC and (for shame) Def Leppard and Duran Duran and Adam and the Ants and such. It was the early 80s and I was 13 looking for chicks, so shut up. It worked.
