Hi, my name is Mark Mullaney and I've been playing the bagpipes for about fourteen years. I've played with two Celtic rock bands over the years, and have experience pairing with guitars, bass, drums, vocals, and other instruments. No instrument sounds quite like the pipes, and it can add a very special energy to a tune.
Mainly I'm looking to meet a keyboardist/synth artist who's willing to try a combo that's almost never been done before. I'm totally open minded to many styles, and if I had to try and describe what I want to do it would be driving and melodic bagpipe/synth pop with an 80's post-punk influence. Probably sounds horrible by the description, but I have hope it could be epic.
As far as pairing with other instruments the bagpipes are surprisingly simple to mesh with. It has a nine note scale from middle G to high A with C and F being sharp. That's it!
Many people have asked what key the bagpipe is and the honest answer is it can change temperamentally, but is roughly around Bb. As the chanter (the recorder like piece) was made thousands of years before "music" was a measured anomaly there wasn't a lot of thought that went into where to carve the note holes, and even less into what pitch to make them.
In fact, pipe bands today tune almost 15 points higher than those of the past, which essentially changes the key. If you were to listen to a recording of a pipe band from the 70's and compare it to a contemporary one this sound difference is fairly obvious (even to the untrained ear).
