Songs I write include stories about old loves, worries about the kid's future, idiocy, etc. I tend to do cover songs that tell a story or set a mood that I can relate to. I tend to fingerpick, whether blues, rock or folk, rather than strum with a pick. On open mic nights, at least before Covid, ironic Blues songs like "Babe, I've Been Downhearted [How Blue Can You Get?]" or "Things that I Used to Do" tended to bring up the crowd.
