Pennsylvania Music Scene
Pennsylvania is a state that is known for its impact on American history, culture,
and music. The Declaration of Independence, a stirring ethos of victory for Americans, was created in the city of Philadelphia. Benjamin Franklin is Pennsylvania’s most recognizable historical figure. It is widely known that he was one of the 5 drafters of the Declaration of Independence, but it should also be noted that he was an accomplished musician and composer. Franklin played the violin, harp, and guitar. He also invented a new type of glass harmonica that revolutionized the way the instrument was played.
“Philly” was the birthplace of the hit TV show American Bandstand, making the city a popular place for musicians. Patti Labelle became a famous Philadelphia export during the 70s with her soulful brand of pop. Boyz II Men experienced a huge string of hits during the 90s and paid tribute to their hometown with the song “Motown Philly”. Philadelphia also has many important musical institutions; its Academy of Music was founded in 1857 and is still functioning today for the same purpose. The Philadelphia Gay Men’s Chorus enjoys a thriving following and serves as a unique celebration of their rights.
Rusted Root’s brand of music reflects the type of atmosphere that Pittsburgh’s culture entails. They mix bluegrass with many other styles of music, much like the melting pot that Pittsburgh society represents. The School of Music at the University of Pittsburgh is an excellent program for aspiring performers and instructors. The school sponsors “Music Mondays”, where performance majors can have the opportunity to showcase their skills and music lovers can see a free concert.
Reading, Pennsylvania is not nearly as well-known as Pittsburgh or Philadelphia, but it does have notable musical ties. Reading native Taylor Swift has ushered in a new generation of country music starlets, following in the footsteps of divas like Faith Hill and Martina McBride.
