Virginia Music Scene
Virginia is enriched with a surprisingly high amount of famous musicians who came from the state. The Dave Matthews Band grew to be one of the biggest successes of the 90s while growing out of the college town of Charlottesville, VA. The list goes on and on: Stewart Copeland of The Police, Chris Brown, D’Angelo, and Missy Elliott are just a sampling of what Virginia has to offer.
Richmond is the center of music scene activity and might be best known for its punk-rock offerings. One of the lewdest, grossest, meanest, but most recognizable punk bands to emerge from Virginia is GWAR. This unsavory band dresses like unearthly monsters and shoots slimy foam into the audience at its performances.
Norfolk, the second-largest incorporated city in Virginia, is home to legendary Las Vegas entertainer Wayne Newton and Timbaland, the unabashed king of hip-hop producers. There is also the Norfolk Academy of Music. This non-profit organization aims to educate those with high musical potential by taking donations from philanthropic organizations such as the Virginia Commission for the Arts and larger corporations like Wachovia. The Virginia Arts Festival is held annually in Norfolk and caters to a variety of different tastes. The acts range from string quartets to classical interpretations of the music of Led Zeppelin
Virginia Beach is one of the most unique and peaceful shores in the nation. The Boardwalk is the place to be for live music on the coast of Virginia. Every summer the city takes a proactive stance in booking by focusing on hiring diverse acts for the tourist population. Every week a new genre of music is introduced, such as Caribbean or Latin.
